Tibor was born in Budapest in 1928, and left in 1949 for good. Mom and I joined him for his third visit back to the city of his birth, knowing that we would learn a lot about Buapest and Tibor's life here before and during World War II. We arrived on Friday afternoon from Geneva and took a cab to the K+K Hotel Opera near fashionable Andrassy Street on the Pest side of the Danube.
Tibor's fluent Hungarian is a great help. He charmed the woman at the registration desk as well as other hotel staff, and we enjoy hearing this most curious language coming out of his mouth. After enjoying dinner at a nearby restaurant, we returned to the hotel to meet Tibor's cousin, Aliz, who has lived in Budapest her entire life.
Aliz and Tibor caught up with each other before she took us on a walk up Andrassy Street to show us the Budapest Light Opera House, where she had bought us tickets for a Saturday evening performance.
